Create an eDrawing

One of the first problems that you will encounter when you try to SHARE files/drawings is that not everyone you want to share a drawing with has SOLIDWORKS software package loaded onto their computer.

The solution to this is for you to create an eDrawing, and that is the purpose of this page.  The technical terminology for this for the drawing file to be ASSOCIATED with a part file.  When this is the case - both the sender and the receiver MUST have the SolidWorks software package installed in their respective computers.  THE SOLUTION is to create DETACHED DRAWINGS.

When a detached drawing is opened it is not necessary to also have the model file loaded.  An added bonus to this method is that annotations (notes) can be added to the drawing.

Option #1
To save a drawing as a DETACHED DRAWING choose "file: save as" from the main menu and then select file type as "detached drawing." (your educational version MAY NOT provide you with this option).

Option #2 The eDrawing

Open the drawing you want to change to an eDrawing.  From the main menu, choose "file: save as" and then select the file type "eDrawings (*.eprt).

For this action to work for the RECEIVER they must have eDrawing publisher installed on their computer.  This is a stand alone program that is installed independently of the full version of SolidWorks.

It does not need to be installed on your computer for you to save a file as an eDrawing, but the it must be installed on the computer of the one you send it to or else they will not be able to open the file.
